Which set of irons is best for a mid- to high-handicap golfer?

November 3, 2011

Question by davud5eva: Which set of irons is best for a mid- to high-handicap golfer?
I have not golfed in a few years, but when I did, I was a mid- to high-handicapper. My club are 10-year-old TopFlite shovels that really just won’t cut it anymore. I’m looking to get back into golfing a few times a week and want clubs that will last a while.

I’m 20 years old and probably have a swing speed in the 90s (just a guess). I hit the ball fairly straight, but struggle with my long irons, and am thus researching hybrid irons to mend this problem (but don’t necessarily need hybrids if regular irons are better).

I have taken particular interest in the Adams IDEA A2 OS hybrid set and the Wilson Staff Di7 set. I have also considered pre-owned Callaway X-18s.

I found the Adams set for $ 199/249 (steel/graphite) and the Wilsons for $ 299 (for either steel or graphite. Does anyone have a preference between the two or another suggestion.

Do yourself a huge favor and try out these clubs before buying them. They are all good clubs, and all have different characteristics. Find the ones that fit your swing the best, not some one elses.

Q&A: What irons are best for my game?

Oktober 28, 2011

Question by Deezy: What irons are best for my game?
I’m looking for a new set of irons. I’ve been playing for a while now and I was on varsity for 4 years in high school. I haven’t been playing to seriously and I’ll be attending the Golf Academy to pursue a Golf Professional career. I’m looking for new irons because my Ping’s I have aren’t that great, and I’m missing a few clubs. I’m looking into the Taylor Made Burner’s, the King Cobra SZ, and S9; but am open to other options. I’ve heard good things about the FT irons from Callaway and basically I’m kinda bombarded with a bunch of decisions. which club, which stiffness. I’m a high handi-capper and I’m looking for that nice club. Please Help.

Best set-up for beginner golfer (2 choices)?

Oktober 27, 2011

Question by Danny McKay: Best set-up for beginner golfer (2 choices)?
I am buying some clubs soon (off of craigslist/ebay to save money) and I have narrowed it down to two options. I am left handed if that matters, but I am trying to debate which is the best set-up to have. Both are selling for about the same price- but the clubs they come with are different. I used to play baseball so I know I will need to work on straightening my drives.

Set-up one:
Callaway Big Bertha War Bird Driver
Callaway Big Bertha War Bird Fairway Wood
Yonex A.D.X. 5 and 7 Woods
Lynx Irons 5-9
Lynx Pitching and Sand Wedges
Ping Zing 2 LS Lob Wedge
Ping Karstens Series Anser 2 Putter
Golf Bag

- My thoughts, sounds good has all I might need (might want a 3 or 5 iron?) Heard good things about big berthas and Ping.
(total set 13 clubs)

Second set-up
Nike NDS irons, 3,4,5,6,7,8,9,PW,SW with steel shafts. Nike CPR 18 degree hybrid. Nike 26 degree CPR hybrid. Nike Sasquatch 3+ 13 degree fairway wood.

- I would still need to buy a golf bag, I’ve heard great things about the hybrids and I could use the sasquatch in place of other woods? I don’t know if I need a driver since I am new but that might be something to keep in mind for the future.
Total set 12 clubs
Shape = Looks like they are in great shape

Since the prices are roughly the same (other than the golf bag) I am just curious as to which would be better in my situation, new, left handed, used to swinging a bat. I will buy whichever set is the best.

Thank you!!!
Thanks for the first reply! I just went to a pro shop and they said I didn’t really need to be fitted, I am normal body size (5’9 – 10) he said just standard clubs would work fine. But idk thanks for the suggestion. Still interested in peoples thoughts!

Answer by Jason A
If you just began at golf its really not going to matter. What you really need to be concerned with is, Shaft flex, length of the clubs, and lie angle of your irons. That is what really will make a difference. I would go to a local pro shop and get fitted before you ever buy a set of clubs. You don’t want to get a set of clubs with a regular shaft flex and find out you need a stiff shaft flex. So get fitted first then look for clubs. At your level your not really going to be able to tell much of a difference between club brands. However if I had to choose i would go with the Nike’s its a bit better of a set. Hope that helps.

Which Driver suits best?

Oktober 24, 2011

Question by I Love Moo Moo Cows: Which Driver suits best?
So I’m a novice at golf (Not quite a Beginner, not an Amateur)
I’ve been using a Palm Springs driver for the past year which I bought second-hand. The head of the driver broke and I’m looking to get a new driver.

I went to my local Golfstore and they recommended 3 drivers.
1)Nike SQ SUMO 5900
2)Nike SQ Dymo2
3)Callaway Big Bertha Diablo.
All nice looking clubs, but I need advice on which one to choose.
I’m 5,7. Right-Handed. I seem to slice the ball alot from the tee, and thats when the guy at the store told me to go for either of the Nike. Then he said if I wanted to go for some real power to go for the Callaway. Anybody got experience with any of the clubs.

Thanks

Answer by Robert
go swing them all, I am a Taylor man so anyone that doesn’t include the Taylor made driver i don’t trust.

Q&A: Best Price on 2008 Callaway Big Bertha Irons?

Oktober 10, 2011

Question by Heath F: Best Price on 2008 Callaway Big Bertha Irons?
Good Afternoon, I’ve finally decided that the 2008 Big Bertha’s are the best fit for this stage of my game, and am ready to make my purchase. Because of their great customer service, and stellar fitting process, I’ll be purchasing this set at Galaxy Golf. They have a price match guarantee, which applies to any legitimate website as well as brick and mortor stores. Right now, their price is $ 599 for the steel shafts, with the best price I’ve found online being $ 549 at Greatgolfdeals.com. I’d like to save every dollar I can, and would appreciate any links to better pricing. Ebay isn’t an option, due to the fact that I’m a very tall guy who needs a great deal of custom fitting to the club. Thanks so much for the help.

Best answer:

Answer by googie
If you are a tall fellow and have been fitted, it may be worth the extra dollars to buy from the person who fitted you rather than scrounging around.. You could try to reduce the price through haggling but since Galaxy Golf fitted you properly and have great customer service don’t you think they deserve some loyalty?

Even Used, Callaway Golf Clubs are Still the Best

Oktober 7, 2011

Callaway golf is the undisputed leader in golf club technology and sales. The company is constantly developing new products and improving existing products to ensure that Callaway golf drivers, woods and putters outperform the competion. In 2003 Callaway Golf was the first golf manufacturer to receive more than 100 US patents in a single year. Their commitment to excellence is unchallenged.

To understand how Callaway Golf compares to other golf club manufacturers, you need only to review their history.

1) 1986, Callaway was the first to use computer controlled milling machines, ensuring the flatness of their putter surfaces;

2) 1995, they had the number one driver on PGA, LPGA, Senior PGA, Nike and European PGA tours. Callaway Golf also became the number 1 golf manufacturer in sales of irons and woods;

3) 1996, they became the worlds largest manufacturer of golf clubs and Callaway Golf Ball Company was formed;

4) 1997, Sales reach 9 million, which was 3 times larger than the nearest golf club manufacturer;

5) 2003, Callaway Golf was the number 1 brand in woods, putters and irons combined for seven consecutive years;

6) 2007, Callaway has 17 products on the Golf Digest Hot List. They have irons, woods, drivers and golf balls which made Editor’s Choice.

Upon reviewing the above history, it is clear that Callaway Golf clubs are the best in the industry. Unfortunately, this technology also comes at a price. A brand new set of Callaway golf clubs can easily cost ,000 – ,000. Although these prices seems high, they are comparable to golf club sets from other large golf manufacturers.

If you are new to the game of golf or do not want to spend as much on golf clubs, you should consider buying used golf clubs. You can purchase used Callaway golf clubs for substantially less while still getting top quality clubs. When purchasing used golf clubs beware of inferior quality merchandise, imitation Callaway golf clubs, clubs that have been altered from original manufacturers specifications and similar issues.

Unless you are a seasoned golf professional or an avid golf player, used Callaway golf clubs are highly recommended. To ensure that the used golf clubs that you’re buying are of the highest quality, purchase certified pre-owned used Callaway golf clubs. The benefits of certified pre-owned golf clubs are as follows:

1) the used golf clubs come with a warranty;
2) the golf clubs are compared to the original manufacturing specifications to ensure quality;
3) they are certified authentic Callaway golf clubs; and
4) they are substantially cheaper than brand new Callaway golf clubs.

Purchasing certified used Callaway golf clubs is similar to purchasing certified pre-owned automobiles. You know what you are getting and you receive a warranty. Make sure your golf club dealer is authorized to sell certified pre-owned used Callaway golf clubs. You can also visit our website for a certified dealer that can sell used Callaway golf clubs that are guaranteed to be authentic.

Best Fairway Woods To Choose?? (3 choices)?

Oktober 7, 2011

Question by Billy Shears: Best Fairway Woods To Choose?? (3 choices)?
My local golf club is selling all fairway woods from 2008 on sale for $ 100. These are the choices:

TaylorMade Burner

Callaway FT-3

Adams idea

Best answer:

Answer by MoMagic
Out of those three I would suggest the TaylorMade Burner. TaylorMade makes some of the best fairway woods on the market. Be sure to demo these clubs, proshops often don’t have a problem with a quick demo.

Consider the “Hybrid” style club for fairway woods. I’ve heard the are easier to hit (less bulk) than a standard fairway wood. Something I will at least consider the next time I spend some money on clubs. Good Luck!
