Q&A: What ball should I use?

November 1, 2011

Question by Jacob: What ball should I use?
I am getting a new set of clubs for Christmas (long way off, I know, but today was like 55*F and raining and not golf weather, and my course will be closed soon), BUT: I am a 14 year old (6’1″) who can drive 190-205, but I am on a budget. At my Target, they have Callaways, Nike, and Top-Flite among others.

Callaway and Nike both have excellent stuff, but the Top-Flite is way better budget wise.

So, in the Top-Flite’s I am deciding between D2 Distance-for more distance or D2 Feel-Soft and is good on and around greens.

I would really like honest opinion about whether I should get a soft ball that feels great off the club and good for scoring, or one a little firmer, but not too hard, that gives me about 5-15 more yards off the tee.
I’m actually just a beginner- started a couple months ago, so am I doing pretty good distancewise (190-205)?

if you want a better short game and touch use the ball with feel, if you want to gain distance but loose some touch on short game, get the distance ball. Top flite is a pretty good ball for a low price, but callaway and nike have good balls that are cheap. good luck

Q&A: My Golf Drive off the tee hits my ball low and abruptly goes up, can someone answer my questions?

September 23, 2011

Question by maxhypa: My Golf Drive off the tee hits my ball low and abruptly goes up, can someone answer my questions?
I had a Callaway Big Bertha 9.5 degree a few years back. Most times when I hit the ball off the tee it takes an unusual flight. The ball would start off low and go about 150 – 180 yards and then shoot up and landed around 275 yards. It seemed like the wind carried my ball upwards, but this would happen on a non windy day.

I then switched my driver to an FT3 9.5 degree neutral and the problem no longer occurred. I was hitting the ball around 270-275 high and then low, but I felt that when I hit the drive with my old Big Bertha, I had a better contact with the ball.

I recently bought the FT9 9.0 degree draw, and I had the same issue that I had on my old Big Bertha. The ball will glide low and then shoot up. My drive was a lot longer than my previous FT3, around 280-285 yards when I hit it solid, but with the draw I tend to hook it a little every once in a while.

My Swing:
When I hit my drives, I start by hovering my club off the ground, so it’s squared to my ball on a high tee. I would bring the club back long and really slow. Really slow meaning, it almost looks like my back swing is in slow motion. I then put a lot of strength and energy it to the club, causing a 115 swing speed.

My 4 questions are:
1.Is it a bad thing if my ball starts low and then shoots up? I know if the drive is longer it is a good thing, but I don’t see this happening to pro’s, so I might need to change something and still have the same yards.
2.Why does this ball flight happen?
3.Is there a golf term for this?
4.I was originally hitting the ball long and straight. Should I have not gone with the draw?

I thank you guys in advance for answering these questions.

I hover my driver too. that gets you more distance. but this means that your driver has too much loft. my brother had that problem. this means you hit it shorter than you can!
Tip: hold the big stick very light for distance

Golf ball, average force, work done by the club on the ball?

April 26, 2010

I. When a 0.041-kg golf ball takes off after being hit, its speed is 42 m/s. How much work is done on the ball by the club?

II. When a 0.049-kg golf ball takes off after being hit, its speed is 36 m/s. Assume that the force of the golf club acts parallel to the motion of the ball and that the club is in contact with the ball for a distance of 0.007 m. Ignore the weight of the ball and determine the average force applied to the ball by the club.

Will a golf ball go farther with a tennis racquet or a golf club?

April 5, 2010

I know if you hit a golf ball with a tennis racquet it will go really far, but does it go farther than you can hit it with a club?
I realize the golf club will be longer and make the swing faster probably, but I don’t think you lose any transfer of energy with raquet strings. I would guess you can hit a tennis ball farther with a racquet than a golf club.

Is it easy to break a golf club by hitting the ground before the ball?

März 18, 2010

I am just starting to golf and was at the driving range today hitting with borrowed clubs. I was using a 1 wood and after the second swing, the club head broke off and went about 40 yards. Is this normal, or did I hit the ground or something? I was scared to hit a driver after that and just stuck with the irons. I’m kind of scared to hit another driver. Is it that easy to break them? Do I just need to be a lot more careful? Thanks.
