Q&A: DRIVER SHAFT: Shaft Flex Point?

Oktober 30, 2011

Question by GoDawgs: DRIVER SHAFT: Shaft Flex Point?
So today I went to my local golf shop to test out some new drivers, as mine is really nothing more than a waste of space. After using their swing analysis tool and hitting about 60 or so golf balls, I found my average swing speed to be 111mph and driving the ball consistantly over 260 – putting me way beyond the limits of my old regular flex shaft, and leading me to find out that there is more to a club than just its degree of flex.

While testing the new Nike Mach Speed Turbo (stiff shaft) and finding myself unable to square the clubface consistantly (which hasn’t been a problem for me in the past when I have used a stiff shaft), I asked if they had any clubs with an extra-stiff shaft. They didn’t, but the employee also told me that an extra-stiff shaft, while parhaps beneficial for my high clubhead speed, might not be the key to helping me square the clubface…

That’s when he brought out the Callaway Diablo Edge Tour (stiff shaft), and I started absolutely crushing balls; even breaking the 300 yard barrier on several occasions. The guy said something to me about most drivers flexing a lot toward the bottom of the shaft near the head, and that this one flexed closer to the middle, but I can’t really remember what it was he was talking about.

Since I don’t really have $ 300 to buy the driver, I’m hoping to find a similar one online. I’m wondering if someone might be able to help me understand what it was the instructor was talking about, so I may look for the right information I need when shopping for clubs. Anyone know what this guy was talking about??

Thanks a lot for your help!

I think you are referring to kick point. If you were able to push on both ends of a shaft at the same time with quite a bit of force, it would bend under the load. Because the shaft is tapered, it would bend at a point closer to the smaller-diameter tip end than to the larger-diameter butt end. A low-kick-point shaft has this flex point closer to the tip and produces a higher launch angle; a high-kick-point shaft has this bend point only about 5 inches from the low kick point, closer to the butt end of the shaft, and produces a lower launch angle. Some shafts also bend in the middle thus having a mid kick point. So it sounds like you were trying out a driver with a low kick point shaft.

Christmas gift suggestion please?

Oktober 29, 2011

Question by kelsy: Christmas gift suggestion please?
I’ve been talking to my current boyfriend for just over 3 months, and have been official for a month now. He’s a huge sports fan. He loves soccer and golf. A few weeks ago he mentioned something about his golf bag being almost complete, it was just missing a 3 wood and a wedge.

I know NOTHING about golf, except that its fun to play, and I went to Golfer’s Warehouse the other day to see what my possibilities were. According to the man there, he said most golfers are particular with their clubs and that my bf might want the same brand 3 wood as the clubs he already has…is that true? does it really matter? if not what would you recommend (callaway, titleist, cobra, ping, Taylormade, cleveland, Adams)?

Is that too much to give? his birthday is the day after xmas so i dont mind spending a lil extra…should i just give a gift that will be for both of us, like tickets to go snowboarding or some kind of dinner at a nice restaurant? He loves soccer, he coaches full time, should i get him an official jersey of his favorite player? a track jacket of his fav team??ugh i hate this…i’ve never had a boyfriend to buy anything for so i dont know what to do?? please lemme know what you think…any other suggestions??

Q&A: What irons are best for my game?

Oktober 28, 2011

Question by Deezy: What irons are best for my game?
I’m looking for a new set of irons. I’ve been playing for a while now and I was on varsity for 4 years in high school. I haven’t been playing to seriously and I’ll be attending the Golf Academy to pursue a Golf Professional career. I’m looking for new irons because my Ping’s I have aren’t that great, and I’m missing a few clubs. I’m looking into the Taylor Made Burner’s, the King Cobra SZ, and S9; but am open to other options. I’ve heard good things about the FT irons from Callaway and basically I’m kinda bombarded with a bunch of decisions. which club, which stiffness. I’m a high handi-capper and I’m looking for that nice club. Please Help.

Best set-up for beginner golfer (2 choices)?

Oktober 27, 2011

Question by Danny McKay: Best set-up for beginner golfer (2 choices)?
I am buying some clubs soon (off of craigslist/ebay to save money) and I have narrowed it down to two options. I am left handed if that matters, but I am trying to debate which is the best set-up to have. Both are selling for about the same price- but the clubs they come with are different. I used to play baseball so I know I will need to work on straightening my drives.

Set-up one:
Callaway Big Bertha War Bird Driver
Callaway Big Bertha War Bird Fairway Wood
Yonex A.D.X. 5 and 7 Woods
Lynx Irons 5-9
Lynx Pitching and Sand Wedges
Ping Zing 2 LS Lob Wedge
Ping Karstens Series Anser 2 Putter
Golf Bag

- My thoughts, sounds good has all I might need (might want a 3 or 5 iron?) Heard good things about big berthas and Ping.
(total set 13 clubs)

Second set-up
Nike NDS irons, 3,4,5,6,7,8,9,PW,SW with steel shafts. Nike CPR 18 degree hybrid. Nike 26 degree CPR hybrid. Nike Sasquatch 3+ 13 degree fairway wood.

- I would still need to buy a golf bag, I’ve heard great things about the hybrids and I could use the sasquatch in place of other woods? I don’t know if I need a driver since I am new but that might be something to keep in mind for the future.
Total set 12 clubs
Shape = Looks like they are in great shape

Since the prices are roughly the same (other than the golf bag) I am just curious as to which would be better in my situation, new, left handed, used to swinging a bat. I will buy whichever set is the best.

Thank you!!!
Thanks for the first reply! I just went to a pro shop and they said I didn’t really need to be fitted, I am normal body size (5’9 – 10) he said just standard clubs would work fine. But idk thanks for the suggestion. Still interested in peoples thoughts!

Answer by Jason A
If you just began at golf its really not going to matter. What you really need to be concerned with is, Shaft flex, length of the clubs, and lie angle of your irons. That is what really will make a difference. I would go to a local pro shop and get fitted before you ever buy a set of clubs. You don’t want to get a set of clubs with a regular shaft flex and find out you need a stiff shaft flex. So get fitted first then look for clubs. At your level your not really going to be able to tell much of a difference between club brands. However if I had to choose i would go with the Nike’s its a bit better of a set. Hope that helps.

Q&A: Do some irons go farther than others based on their design/type of club? Will I lose distance switching irons?

Oktober 26, 2011

Question by johnderson: Do some irons go farther than others based on their design/type of club? Will I lose distance switching irons?
I currently play the callaway x-20s which are fairly bulky and are an all around game improvement club. After playing with them a while, I realized I have acheived just about all these clubs have to offer in terms of feel, ball flight, spin and control. However, I can hit these a mile as I had an average distance of 210 yrds. from my six iron when I was getting fitted. I noticed it is easy to hit these a long way but there is hard to hit different shots other than a full on golf swing…. like punches or under the wind shots. So now I am looking at getting the mp-62s or Titleist ap2 but will I lose considerable distance with these clubs compared to my callaways? They seem a lot thinner and are designed for shot making and feel over sheer distance right?

P.S. What are some good irons on the market that are forgiving but still payable?( looking at mp-62 or titleist ap2s). Been playing 2 years and am currently ~14-16 handicap.

Know More About Official Specifications on Golf Clubs

Oktober 25, 2011

Wether the we used meet the specifications? As a matter of fact, before we buy the club, even before the products are released, the golf clubs manufacturers have already submitted a sample to the USGA of every countries, to test whether the clubs meet the rules. If manufacturers failed to submit samples or don’t wait for the results before producing or promoting the golf clubs, they have to take the risk of violating the rules. For the purpose of reference for the record, the submitted samples will be kept by R&A Or USGA.

General speaking, we have to refer the Subsidiary Rules II of Rule 4. The following are several points of explainations.

1. The General Rule says that the clubs are designed to play with. Generally are divided according to the shape and funtions into three types: woods, irons and putters. Putter is designed for putting on the green, and its loft shall not exceed 10 degrees. Golf club mustn’t be made in essentially different structure from the traditional and customary form. Clubs must include head and shaft, with all parts be fixed. In addition to be permitted by the rules, the club also may not have external appendages.

]]>

2. About Adjustability : In addition to adjusting the entire weight of the whole club, other kind of weight regulation is permitted according to R & A and USGA’s assessment. But there are some forms of regulation. And the rules allow the adjustment method on the following bases:

(i) Adjustment can not be easily carried out;

(ii) All adjustable parts are firmly fixed and can not be loose in a race. And the structural adjustments must meet all the rules.

3. Club length: A golf clubs should be not less than 18 inches (457.2 mm), and not exceed 48 inches (1219.2 mm) except for putter. For example, the shaft length of # 7 iron is37”. The length of woods and irons is to measure the length from the grip to the angle vertex of the club face botton and ground level when flattly placing the club on the level surface.

4. When the club is in a normal stateits shaft must be calibrated in the following states. The vertical angel between the projective planes of shaft’s straight part and the vertical line of toe should be less than 10 degrees.

Talk About The Offset of Golf Clubs

Oktober 24, 2011

Some of are designed without hosel, to pursue better feel and kick back effect, especially old Callaway drivers. The hosel design is directly related to the torsion of golf clubs. Offset hosel is helpful to increase the hitting distance, but may correspondingly lost accuracy. Callaway golf claims that it’s offset hosel hybrids- keeps the face closed at impact, which enhance the ball flight pattern from the right to left. Callaway golf clubsCo. once tried to position the tungsten screw, making the gravity angle of the driver was biased toward the draw side.

Then what is the definition of offset? Offset refers to the hosel is set in front of the leading edge of the clubface. Early golf clubs didn’t have offset until 1970s when Pinggolf created the precedent. From then on, offset design was widely use. This design is used almost in golf irons, golf drivers, fairways and golf hybrids designs. begin to join this the distance between the gravity center of club head and the axis of shaft is fundamentally determined by the hosel. As to the inset, the inset hosel is to make the distance between shaft axis and CG shorter and therefore effectively minimize the toe-down and shut-face phenomena.

]]>

What is the importance of offset? Firstly, offset design makes the distance between the gravity center of clubs head and shaft is far, which is able to bring high trajectory of the ball. That is to say, more offset makes the ball fly higher in the air. Secondly, offset adds time that golf players spend on the downswing to rotate the face of the club head back around, fully prepare to arrive at impact closer and be square to the target line. So another advantage is offset is able to reduce the rate of slice or fade the ball. To sum up, through positioning the leading edge behind the hosel offset encourages players to lead the hands through impact, which helping the club head to hit down on the ball and get the ball effectively into the air. Offset will close the face slightly bringing pull to slice a straighter shot.

Which Driver suits best?

Oktober 24, 2011

Question by I Love Moo Moo Cows: Which Driver suits best?
So I’m a novice at golf (Not quite a Beginner, not an Amateur)
I’ve been using a Palm Springs driver for the past year which I bought second-hand. The head of the driver broke and I’m looking to get a new driver.

I went to my local Golfstore and they recommended 3 drivers.
1)Nike SQ SUMO 5900
2)Nike SQ Dymo2
3)Callaway Big Bertha Diablo.
All nice looking clubs, but I need advice on which one to choose.
I’m 5,7. Right-Handed. I seem to slice the ball alot from the tee, and thats when the guy at the store told me to go for either of the Nike. Then he said if I wanted to go for some real power to go for the Callaway. Anybody got experience with any of the clubs.

Thanks

Demo Playing Is A Good Way To Choose Right Golf Clubs

Oktober 23, 2011

It is a common headache for golf players, especially for golf beginners to choose the most right for themselves. We may consult with the clubs salesmen in golf shops, find suggestions from golf forums or friends. We often see some second-handed golf clubs sales online and the sellers claim that they have brought wrong clubs. It is very importance to find a right golf clubs to improve your playing.

It is wrong to consider the looks of clubs instead of its playability. Bladed irons and cavity back irons are two kinds of irons. Blades are with smoother lines and smaller heads, which look more beautiful and classic. As usual, professional golf players would love this kind of irons, because they are able to bring better spin and sense of controllability. But for common players, cavity back irons are more forgiveness than the former ones, with weight located around the clubs head. and Callaway Diablo Edge irons are typical cavity back irons, which are claimed to be most famous for their forgiveness. Blades irons are more suitable for high level players who have steady swing. So if you only pursue beautiful looks of irons, you may lose your scores.

It is also incorrect to buy the clubs that are used by tour champions or top golf stars. We always see some famous stars won a champions with some new released golf clubs from some big brand golf manufacturers. They performed perfectly, so the clubs must be very good. It is a big mistake. Phil Mickleson You know, these clubs used by golf stars are specially fitted for them, not just in the aspects of flexibility and shaft length, but also in the shape of clubs heads, the sole grid, the weight of shaft, the size of grip, the lie angle, the kick point, material and swing weight ect. These clubs are discussed and adjusted countless times in the whole process during design and produce. Every specifications are meet the needs of the professional players, which are made to more suitable for their habits and personalities. However for general public, it is impossible to do such a custom fitting. Generally such fitting is very expensive, as much as &10000 on a complete set of .

Then what is the best way for us to find a propriate set of irons? The answer is demo hitting. Demo hitting is a definitely correct way. Generally the local golf courses hold demo days. Also the major brand golf manufacturers list demo preparation information on their official websites. There’re nine demo days of at several golf courses in QLD. If you don’t find any scheduled demo days, it does not matter. You may ask the local courses to look into it and give you a reply. Usually, golf brands companies hold demo playing when new golf clubs are released. Public are not familiar with their performance. On that day, you are able to take a glimpse of the golf clubs what are usd by professional tour golf players. There are a great many of choice. Just try various of golf clubs as many as possible. The staffs of golf courses will explain the advantages of different golf clubs with different specifications. You are easy to feel which kind of clubs are most suitable for your swing.
