Where exactly am I supposed to get distance from my golf swing?

Mai 18, 2010

I know that it’s not power from my arms. I know it has to do with swing speed. Where is the speed supposed to be coming from? I am 5’8″ 147 lbs. My friend is 5’10″ 120 lbs. and drives the ball 280 yards or so. I can’t get it passed 170. Please help. Where is the distance supposed to come from at the point of impact with the ball?
And I will be taking lessons soon, I just wanted to try to get this down pat. Thanks.

  1. spartanlich1 Said,

Distance comes from the lower body. Leg drive and hip turn.

Drill: Grip a driver with your left hand only.
    Swing with left hand only.
Swing continuously (Back and through without stopping)
On each downswing, concentrate on pushing your right knee toward the target and feel the additional power it generates.
Your left forearm will get sore after a bit. Repeat daily until you can do 30-35 consecutive swings without fatigue.
You will see a change over about a month.

Please note. If you ever get it down pat….you will be teaching others. Distance as well as accuracy come from a solid golf swing….No where else. Once you have learned the basics from the lessons you said you would be taking….your distance will come aroundpretty quick.. Also distance has nothing to do with height and weight.

    Your legs and hips.

  4. googie Said,

Since you are going to take lessons, there is not much to tell you except distance comes from the late release of the club against a firm left side with an extended follow through. This combination generates the power as well as the swing speed.

  5. Donkey Said,

Your friend probably hits the ball more solidly than you do. Concentrate on good mechanics and fundamentals. You will find that you hit the ball much further when you swing the club properly and hit the ball in the center of the clubface.

  6. Flatstick Said,

Distance comes from clubhead speed at impact. The clubhead speed comes from your hands leading the clubhead down, and the clubhead lagging behind the hands due to the shafts flex. Then just as the hands reach the impact zone and release, the shaft whips the clubhead through. So the clubhead lag and the correct shaft flex for your strength is what will get you distance. When you take your lesson the pro can help you with the technique to create lag, but be sure to ask him if he thinks you have the right shafts in your clubs.

A lot of these guys are correct, but its not one things that gives distance!

Like one guy said about the “lag” (picture yourself standing in waist high water, on your downswing the bottom of your grip would break the water if you choke up) helps you generate club head speed (which someone else said this is what gives distance). Again, someone said the lower body gives you power (coiling), they are correct too. Also, hitting the center of the club face with it being square adds to distance.

Something no one mentioned, height can add club head speed. Some people probably will disagree, BUT, take a 10 foot rod and mount it on something that will spin it, but not in the middle. Say one end 4′ and one 6′, if there was a club head on each end the club head with the 6′ pole would be traveling faster (mph) maybe not much but it could cause a few yards (from 270-275 yards for a couple inches). That is not shaft based but arm based.

    Hope this helps.
