What hybrid should I get?
November 2, 2011
My Wood work needs help so I went to the local golfsmith and tried out the TaylorMade tp burner 19* and the Callaway X 18*. I liked both of them in the store but out of your expiriences on the golf course what would you recomend? I’m a rookie golfer with not much power (5wood 175) so I need big time forgiveness in a club. Also do you prefer steel or graphite?

i havent tried either of those clubs, however i have an MD golf superstrong18* hybrid, which has one of the best graphite shafts on the market and that suits me just fine, plus its alot cheaper than the Taylormade and callaway clubs, and personally i dont think they are any better. The MD golf superstrong driver was joint longest driver on the market and it is a third of the price of some callaway drivers.
Wouldnt worry to much about distance, if you do, you are maybe trying to hit it harder to get more distance then that is probably why you are inconsistent(or one of the reasons). I am a short hitter aswell and it doesnt effect me, all it means is after my drive i hit a 3iron and my playing partner hits a 5iron.
Graphite is better for woods and hybrids, especially as you are a short hitter, i would get steel in your wedges and short irons because it helps with accuracy. Hope i was of some help, remember it is ultimately you not the clubs which will shave strokes off your score, its so easy to become an equipment junkie, especially when you start out, i would buy a cheaper club and spend the spare money on lessons!
As an elderly golfer without much power these days, I bought a metal Rescue club, a number 4. It’s very forgiving, will fly a ball 175 yards or more and is great for getting your ball out of the rough. Even the pros carry them nowadays.
You should be able to buy one in the UK for £100 or half this price in the US.
Steel or graphite ? Until you get a singe figure handicap it will make little difference to your play.
It’s mainly a matter of confidence; get out on the practise range and hit a bucket of balls; even consider having a lesson.
dude, get one of the nike hyrbrids. The sumo or the sumo 2, they are a beast. Get a lite shaft graphite shaft, this will help improve you distance accuracy. I recomend, since you are new to the game, get a 3, 4, and 5 iron hybrid, they’re so much easier to hit and soon will take over the five iron like they did the 4.
Try the Ping G10 or the Taylormade Burner…I prefer graphite…
It depends on your personal liking;
1. 5 wood look alike hybrid – this type offers a larger club head
2. Iron wood – this type looks like a long iron during address but offer the wood forgiveness.
You decide.
GET THE HIBORE
Graphite definitely. Typically you’ll get more distance with graphite. As far as the two brands you mentioned, if you are loyal to a brand choose one or the other. You won’t go wrong with either. I’m a Nike guy so I forsake all other brands.
