Should I change drivers when I am hitting it 320 yards at the driving range?
Oktober 19, 2011
I started golf a month ago, and I have used a driver for 3 days now and my drives are going further and further with my avg drive being about 300 now and 2 out of 10 drives going about 320. Its fair to say I can hit 290-300 straight consistently but when I try to swing harder I tend to slice it and can only get about 20% of my shots to go 320 and straight. MY QUESTIONS ARE: 1. would changing clubs to the Callaway FT IQ with the same stiff shaft and 10 degree loft help me to be able to consistently hit it 320 and straight?
2. Would the Taylormade R9 be a better choice?
3. Should I just stick witht the callaway FT5 since I can hit it 300 consistently after just 3 days hitting a driver in my life?
BTW, I AM ABOUT 5 FOOT 11 AND 220 LBS WITH ABOUT 15% BODY FAT….THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR ANY RESPONSE AND FEEL FREE TO EMAIL ME SUGGESTIONS. I HAVENT HIT ANY OF MY OTHER CLUBS THE LAST 3 DAYS BECAUSE IM SO FASCINATED WITH THE DRIVER AND THE DISTANCE I AM GETTING, IT CAUSES A CROWD TO WATCH AT THE DRIVING RANGE AND I LIKE THE ATTENTION

Sure…maybe have 10 or 12 different drivers in your bag.
You do understand that, on a typical 18 hole course you’ll hit the driver 14 times (at most).
Your putter will be used at least twice as much. Of course, you’ll soon post a “question” about how you shoot 53 for 18 holes and how you can bet the pros.
Your technical questions…either go see a PGA Professional, or keep fishing for compliments (you’ve clearly got a massive ego).
There’s an old saying…it’s not the arrow, it’s the Indian. Meaning it’s not the club, it’s the guy swinging it.

Mate,
With those sort of distances I would be keeping the driver. In a round of golf, you would use the driver a total of 10 times (or even less). Out of a Par of 72. Hence the other 62 shots (and more given you are a beginner) are going to be played with the other clubs.
I would suggest KEEP that driver, save yourself some money & work on hitting those irons as well as you can. Dont forget to practice your putting equally hard as well.

The average length of drives on the PGA Tour is 285 yards. Less than 10% hit the ball 300 yards consistently. These guys are the best in the world, have been practicing for at least ten years, and play most of the year with the best equipment available. After one month from scratch, and three days after picking up a driver for the first time, you are driving better than all but the most powerful guys on the Tour such as Tiger Woods. I think not. One of the best pieces of advice I can give you at the start of your golf career is to know your own game in the sense of how far you ACTUALLY hit a ball with each club. I played off a 2 handicap for years and never hit the ball anything like as far as an average touring professional. Put the driver away and practice your short game.
It is amazing how many golfers who make their statements on the internet hit drives longer than Tiger, Phil and Bo Weekley. Since you are enthralled with distance, you had better confine yourself to long driving contests. That takes muscle and timing. It doesn’t involve much thinking.
What a tool.
