Q&A: Why can’t I hit my irons that far?
Oktober 21, 2011
I’ve been playing golf for two to three years now. I started by taking lessons from an excellent instructor in the Pinehurst area and have a nice compact smooth looking swing. I have a one plane swing that relies on my body rotation to hit the ball by slinging my upper body through the shot with my hips, and hit the ball straight (most of the time). My driver is fine and I can keep up with the guys I usually play with who hit around 260-290 on average. My irons however are usually 1-3 clubs shorter than they are. It wouldn’t bother me so much but it kills me on the par 3′s when it’s 175 yards and I’m hitting a 4 iron and they’re hitting 6 or 7. I would like to be able to use a more lofted club like that to stick the green rather than watch it hit and roll off the back on these narrow or shallow greens. I just don’t understand the drastic difference in the irons. I use Callaway X-18s that are stock except new grips. Any help, advice, or insight would be greatly appreciated.

Have you looked at swing speed or taped your club face to see where impact is?
You might be hitting the ball towards to the toe or heel. That gives up a lot of yardage.
I have the same type of problem and bought a few hybrid clubs. They really help get the ball in the air at the 170 to 190 yard distances.
You must be playing on really hardpan greens if you ball doesn’t stay…

What kinds of clubs and balls are your freinds using?
I have a buddy who i outdrive regularly, but he’s a club longer on every single iron. My irons are 5 yr old callaways, and he’s got brand new taylor made r7′s. i borrowed a club from him once and over shot my target by 15 yds cuz his club was so much hotter.
Also, if theyre using high performance golf balls and you’re using cheap topflites, that can have somethig to do with it. Try mixing in some new balls for starters and see if you really just lag in technology.
I’ve heard Callaway irons just play shorter than other similar brands. Never owned them myself.
For about $ 20 per club, you could have 1″ extentions put into the butt end and new grips put on. You may want to have the lie adjusted to compensate though.
Or you could hood the face a little, push your hands forward a little more. That can cause you to hook a little more than you’re used to though.
Or you could go to a golf shop and hit on the simulator or launch monitor and go with something longer.
Or you could work on club head speed, maybe by using a weighted club for practice.
Or you could accept the fact that you aren’t the longest hitter in the group and work on accuracy.
Good luck.
The type of irons you’re using can make a dramatic difference. I had a set once I couldn’t hit far at all. I changed to Ping and did much better. I went back and tried the old ones a year later with the same poor results. See if they will let you try their clubs on a couple more shots and talk with the pro. You may just have to change clubs.
If your swing mechanism is perfect, the only way to increase your distance is to use graphite club shafts. If you have to reach the green with 4 iron, what is the problem? You got the job done. If a golfer can hit 7 irons for 175 yards with good control and accuracy, he can hit 150 yards using 9 irons. I think he is qualified as a half pro already. My coach always told me that it is not the distance, but the direction that matters. It is reasonable to get 175 yards with 6 or 5 irons for club golfer level. If you have to use 4 irons to reach the green, so what, you got the job done. We are not doing long distance competition.
Otherwise, you have to work on your swing mechanism by increasing the club head speed. Good luck, buddy. I think you are fine.
Hit down with your irons, take divots in front of your ball, and ensure that you swing through with a full finish. That way when your club makes contact with the ball it’s on its fastest speed and highest momentum. By taking divot you are compressing the ball between the club and the ground, creating more back spin.
Also do not forget to release your wrist hinge late. Do not release at the top, but when your arms are vertical to the ground.
You might be swinging really shallow or doing something in your swing that adds loft at impact… I really don’t know what to say cuz I have sort of the opposite problem….
