Q&A: What ball should I use?
November 1, 2011
I am getting a new set of clubs for Christmas (long way off, I know, but today was like 55*F and raining and not golf weather, and my course will be closed soon), BUT: I am a 14 year old (6’1″) who can drive 190-205, but I am on a budget. At my Target, they have Callaways, Nike, and Top-Flite among others.
Callaway and Nike both have excellent stuff, but the Top-Flite is way better budget wise.
So, in the Top-Flite’s I am deciding between D2 Distance-for more distance or D2 Feel-Soft and is good on and around greens.
I would really like honest opinion about whether I should get a soft ball that feels great off the club and good for scoring, or one a little firmer, but not too hard, that gives me about 5-15 more yards off the tee.
I’m actually just a beginner- started a couple months ago, so am I doing pretty good distancewise (190-205)?

if you want a better short game and touch use the ball with feel, if you want to gain distance but loose some touch on short game, get the distance ball. Top flite is a pretty good ball for a low price, but callaway and nike have good balls that are cheap. good luck

Well il be honost. but its to improve your game so dont take it the wrong way. Im guessing sense you can only drive 190-205 that your not a great golfer. But i would recommend a top flite because they are firmer and you wont hit as many hooks or slices with a lower spin ball (firmer ball is the same thing). And once you get better move up to a soft ball and your game will get even better.
Good luck.
Edit: Thats what i expected, probably a beginner. and 205 is really good for a beginner so you want to get more accuracy out of your ball which is why you should use a harder ball (Top Flite)
As a beginning golfer you should walk the course where you play ( provided they don’t enforce the trespassing laws) and find the balls that others have lost. That is the way most of us old caddies got our start. Even today , 65 years after the fact, it is hard to go into the pro shop to buy balls if there isn’t pro shop credit. However , either Top-flite is a good ball for anyone, beginner or not.
As a begginer i doubt you can tell the difference between balls at this point, i know u can between the rocks and softer ball. Driving distance sounds good for begginer
