Q&A: Is there a reason why it seems that I have lost 8-10 yards per club with my new set of Callaway x-22?
Oktober 2, 2011
steel shaft irons. I was playing an older set of Titliest DCI blades earlier in the year and had no problems. I am a shorter guy (5’6″) and asked the golf shop to improve my lie. They ended up cutting approx. 3/4 inch off of the shaft. I do find that I am hitting the ball straighter with the new irons, but I have most definitely lost 8-10 yards per club. Any suggestions? Could the angle have changed as well?

probably your on on a new lie or angle and are not used to it yet.

Shortening a club will flatten the lie, which will help a player who is not as tall as most. 3/4″ is a lot though (the usual spacing between clubs is 1/2″), so your five iron (for example) is now shorter than a standard 6 iron, and club length is one component of generating clubhead speed (a longer club will be moving faster at the end than a shorter one), so all things being equal you’re simply not going to be able to move a iron head as quickly now as you did before it was cut down. 8-10 yards is not a surprising loss, and is right around what I would have guessed based on that much of a club length reduction.
My advice to you is to forget about your old distances and get used to your new ones. If your ball striking has improved then this sounds like a success.
Once you made that cut of 3/4 of and inch off, your lie angle did changed. I am not really sure why they cut that much off. X-22 come standard for someone 5’7 to 5’9. You need to go get fit!
On a side note it does not surprise me that you are hitting the ball straighter going from a blade to cavity back, which also mean going from a 10yr. old iron to a current model iron you should be see around 5 to 7 yards increase in distance.
The shorter shaft would cause that a little bit. Also the shafts could have different flexes (Callaways stiff could be different than Titleist’s stiff as an example). The angle could help as well.
