I’m having a hard time getting my golf club to parallel on the backswing?

August 1, 2011

Question by CubeScience: I’m having a difficult clip getting my golf club to parallel on the backswing?
I’m an excoriation tourney am. with busman distance of about 280yds (r7 XStiff YS+8.1) , 6 iron 185 (Callaway X forged carbine 6.). I caveat most of my challenger are longer then me, with these retentive coolant swing they all look to played it 300 yds without still essaying. I’ve done a committedness this away period to genuinely focusing on my backswing, specially the circumference of it as I can’t yet get to parallel. Any idea on stretch, or workout?i’m in my mid 30′s..I’ve ever been very flexile growing up, and pretty acrobatic, but after giving up the competition for about 5 yr and coming rearwards to it, ive detected i’m no longer getting to parallel.

I read your response to the person that had a concern with the flex of the shaft they were using and you mentioned that you had a fast transition to the top. Is that your effort to get the shaft more parallel at the top? If that is true you may not be flexible enough to achieve your goal. I’ve played lots of golf with non-scratch golfers that absolutely crush the ball off the tee and the one thing they all have in common is that they that all get to the top effortlessly, maintain their balance and then start the down swing, maintaining the wristcock and lag until it’s not possible to maintain that position. You don’t mention your age so you’re probably not 20 but I would guess that you may need to introduce stretching and flexibility exercises into your pre-round golf routine and still do stretching on the course just to maintain more flexibility. I have a weighted cover that fits on any driver and I swing that easily just to stretch and lengthen the large muscle groups in my back and shoulder and that works for me. I would be curious to know what you did do to remedy the problem.

I agree, get some stretching in. One quick fix would be to open your stance by rotating the right foot at set up. This means instead of placing both feet parallel to the target and pointing straight ahead of you. Turn your right foot out (to the right) about 45 deg or until comfortable. This will allow you to make a longer back swing until you get more flexible.

The only problem with parallel, for me @ least (roughly same stats as you except age…) is that if I take the club back to far, I then clear out my hips. I slide them out in front instead of turn them. Mostly, through all my lessons, it was preached to me that the back swing is partly irrelevant, just to the fact that you exceed your club head speed through the ball. You don’t mention swing speed, but I’m assume 105+ with the XS YS8 shaft…like I said roughly same stats my self. It’s really hard to give swing info just by words and w/o seeing the swing, it’s hard to know if you have a normal fade, or a draw, what are your misses, do you snap a miss, or do you cut them really bad? That is the main problem with opening your stance, if you have a quick swing, you then become more liable to hit a massive hook!

Chief the first thing use a different club….I would suggest using a hybrid club, this is mainly because you can get a better trajectory out of the club. Look on it this way its not the power in your back swing that is all wrong, it is really the iron that you are using. I use a regular hybrid that replaces my iron for longer drives. At first with my regular iron I got low height and could not pass 240 yards. Then when I began using the hybrid because the face of the club was smaller I was getting less resistance and more power which gave me a better trajectory. Game ON!. I made 300 yards and kept that average ever since. So you might want to change the iron. You see your stance is important but you must golf and be comfortable; if you have to concentrate on stance, form and everything else you just wont strike the ball well and vice versa, so I say the game is developed with tools for you to use, get a better club, my 2 cents….I watched a great video post at shopgolf.info, you should read about the hybrids and watch the video befor you even take another swing.
