I’ve had my Guru for about a month. I compared it to all of the Sky Caddie models as well as some of the other smaller vendors before purchasing.

First off, it works great. Follow the Quick Start directions and you’ll be off and running in no time. I like that it automatically checks for the latest firmware release and downloads that to your Guru (if needed) everytime you hook it up to download new courses.

It is the smallest unit out there — a little bigger than my Palm Centro but nice and thin/lite. I carry it in my back pocket and pull it out like a yardage book before every shot. It doesn’t get smashed if I sit in the cart either

I didn’t buy the Sky Caddie for the following reasons:

1. Size — it’s a little bigger/fatter than the Guru

2. Annual Fees — who wants to pay /year ??

3. Satellite Acquisition — these things only work well if they’re able to sync to enough Satellites to be accurate. I’d heard from a few friends that they no longer use their Sky Caddies because they would lose “sync” too many times to be useful/trusted. Guru syncs fast and connects to more Satellites.

The Guru has far fewer courses than the Sky Caddie but they’ve been able to map all of the courses I’ve requested (at least 5) in less than 7 days — certainly acceptable to me.

One other suggestion if you have a Guru and a Garmin Nuvi (360 is what I have)– the A/C charger works for both (if you’re like me, it’s hard to keep all of my cords/chargers tagged, etc). Save the from Golf Guru and use your Garmin charger.

In a nutshell, if you want a fairly simple device that works great and fits in your pocket, The Guru is the one for you. When you’re on the course, fancy color graphics aren’t going to lower your score — quick, accurate info at your fingertips will …

Just got mine and played my first round with it this weekend – very impressed with operation and ease of use. Unit is small (cell phone size) Course download was easy (and free) and once I turned it on there was little to do other than switch between views – information presented on the screen is thorough and useful and I am pleased that I can read it without my reading glasses. I am going to look for a carrying case to attach it to my bag but otherwise it just needs more courses loaded. I have not personally used the competing products (SkyCaddie, Garmin, etc.) but I would recommend this on the basis of cost and ease of use.

I bought the unit, took it home, charged it up, turned it on, it works.

The following day I went to the golf course, turned it on. The unit found the golf course I Was going to play, but with another golf course info. Played with it trying to get the correct info, got frustrated and turned it off.

When I got home, I turned on the computer, went to the Golf Buddy website. Followed the instructions, plugged in the Golf Buddy and registered the unit.

The next day I went to the same golf course, and turned on the unit. The unit found the golf course and the correct tees, hooray!!!! I recommend registering the unit first.

The Golf Buddy works as stated. No monthly or yearly fees, and all my golfing friends want to use it, I have to take it away from them so I can use it. I Highly recommend this Unit.

Have used it at 3 golf courses in San Jose and 3 in Temecula, and it works great.

I did a lot of research on all the golf GPS units on the market and chose the GolfBuddy Pro because of its huge 20,000 course capacity, automatic course and hole recognition, ease of use, reasonable price, and lack of a subscription fee. They currently have about 12,000 courses mapped in the U.S. and another 4,000 outside the U.S. They don’t have as many courses mapped as SkyCaddie or iGolf, but I’ve noticed they have been adding courses quickly. Most of the courses I had been looking for were already mapped and most of the ones that weren’t were added within 3 wks. The GolfBuddy takes about 2 minutes to lock onto the satellites and 1-2 minutes to bring up the course and hole automatically. I turn it on when I approach the clubhouse and it’s ready to go on the first hole. Once I discovered that it takes about 5 seconds for the distance to stabilize after you stop walking, the unit’s accuracy has been quite good. I tested the accuracy against the 150 yd marker on 8 holes and found it to be within 3 yds on 6 of those holes and within 5 yds on all 8. Most holes already have all the important targets mapped, but it’s easy to add your own targets if needed (e.g. distance to doglegs). I love the shot distance feature, which requires the push of just one button. It’s really useful to know how far I hit each club.

Just got an SG2 and used it today for the first time on one of the professional SkyCourses that you can download from their web site. Yardages to front, center and back of greens as well as key markers along a hole were all available. The Intelligreen feature allowed me to move the cursor to the exact postion on a green by pressing the four-way toggle switch on the unit.On the whole the product worked without flaw – distance readouts were clear and easy to read and even the detailed, more esoteric descriptions for fairway bunkers, distance to water etc… were intuitive. I was using the SG2 for the first time on a course I had not played before, so having detailed yardage information was definately a plus. The unit did take a while to acquire the necessary satellte signals when I first turned it on but this was something that was mentioned in the manual. Once acquired, I had extremely good coverage for the entire round.However, for 0 plus .95 a year for a basic subscription which gets you 5 professioanl courses in your area (and the ability to store additional courses that you create) the package seems just too pricey. It’s useful, to be sure, but what price do you put on additional yardage information?

This is almost a good unit BUT:· It is difficult to switch between displaying distance & recording positions
· The display is difficult to read under golf course conditions. You can display the distance to the center of the green only in large numbers which are readable.
· You must pay yearly to save you data. You cannot transfer coordinates to the unit or save them on your computer.
· Poor Warranty – Only a thirty day warranty but you can spend more for an extended warranty
· Compared with other GPS units it is costly.
· The display on my unit became cloudy after 30 days! It was only exposed to stuff encountered on the golf course like perhaps sweat, sun screen, bug repellent & Golf course chemicals.
· The unit would be a good buy if larger characters displayed, the Cloudy display fixed, ease of use improved, 1 year warranty and the ability to transfer data to & from the users computer
· For comparison, I took a 0 Magellan to the golf course & found it much easier to use & could display four items in large characters. The unit only displays in feet up to 512 so it is not acceptable for this use. I entered a route which included the center of each green but the unit often switched to the wrong green. This would be a great range finder if it were to be programmed to display in yards and if the algorithm for advancing to the next point in a route would be adapted to golf courses. I was one of their early adopters (way before USGA and R&A made them legal) and had their original SkyCaddie. Back then, it was a technological breakthrough and I benefitted (and my buddies) on the course. And last year I started my quest to find the latest golf GPS. Of course, the first place to look was at SkyCaddie. SG5 was their first color display, improved GPS reception, bigger display…but nothing really new in terms of features. I guess they figured they had the market cornered as their competition was range finders. Meanwhile, I was starting to get tired of their limitations such as I can only load 10 courses at a time, their customer service (or lack of) and their annual membership.

However, while they sat on their rear, this product sector evolved and other competitors jumped in. This year there are whole suite of new GPS with next generation features. I looked at uPro Golf (now owned by Callaway). Cool flyby like what you see on TV, but noticed from other users that it had several common issues mostly with their display and battery life. So my search continued. I then looked at OnPar Golf. It looked like my iPhone with the similar touchscreen and icons. That UI works for iPhone, but not for golf GPS. Then I looked at Bushnell Yardage Pro XCG. I thought this was it. It had everything I wanted, no major issues mentioned by other users/reviewers. One of my buddies bought one and I had a hands-on experience on a course. I was actually one click away from owning it (from Amazon, of course) and I decided to make one last google…and then I found Garmin’s Approach G5 unit. Yup, it’s most expensive GPS unit but it’s made by Garmin, the GPS expert. I’ve been very happy with their Nuvi GPS units. They currently have 9,400+ courses and they’re FREE. NO ANNUAL MEMBERSHIPS! You simply download new courses from their web site and you can load all those courses on your unit so no more shuffling courses onto my unit. Best of all, it’s waterproof! Unlike Skycaddie, you’re not limited to the 40-targets on each hole (though,I typically only see a handful). You just drag a circle with your finger on a birds-eye-view and it will tell you how far you are to that. It also keeps scores up to 4 and you can download it to your PC afterwards. I also like that you use batteries instead of rechargeable. I lost count of time I forgot to charge my SkyCaddie and when my buddies call me last minutes I couldn’t use it the whole round. Now, I just keep spare batteries in my bag.

So, the bottom line is before you consider SkyCaddie units, research the other GPS models before plunking down your hard earned money. I’m confident that you’ll find one with much better features for a similar price. If you’re interested in the Garmin G5, there are ton of videos on YouTube so check them out! If money is not an option, then definitely go with Garmin Approach G5. Otherwise, the Bushnell Yardage Pro XCG is your best bet.

Also, for those that own iPhone 3G/3GS there are quite a few apps you can use to make your iPhone into Golf GPS. I’ve been tinkering with Golfshot (the .99 version. Don’t bother with their 99 cent version) and I have to say it’s damn good app. It even comes with statistical report so you know which part of your game you should be working on. But I’m sticking with my Garmin G5, because the Golfshot depletes my iPhone battery like crazy. My iPhone is not rugged and waterproof either so I’ll use it as my backup, but not as my main golf GPS.

This unit is wonderful. Loaded like a charm. The Subscription was about for a year and you can load 10 courses for this rate. There are higher subscription rates if you’d like to have more courses or even international courses. Change courses as often as you like.

This even had the specs for my favorite “remodeled” course which was finished in February. Very up-to-date info.

Accurate! Will measure to the center of the green and will even measure your drive distance. Problem is, when other people on the course see my skycaddie that all want to “play” with it. It can slow down the game.
